Matching Cards with Objects is one of the steps to start observing words as a step towards reading. The Metal Insets help the child trained to interpret the outlines of the drawn figures with his eye and his hand is prepared for drawing them through the motions made by his fingers in tracing their outlines. When a teacher has a child see and touch the letters of the alphabet, three sensations come into play simultaneously sight, touch, and kinesthetic (muscular) sensation. This is why the image of the graphic symbol is fixed in the mind much more quickly than when it is acquired through sight in the ordinary methods. Touching the letters and looking at them at the same time fixes their images more quickly because of the coordination of the senses. Later the two will be separated: seeing will be employed in reading and touching in writing.
